New Delhi: India recorded 18,087 cases of coronavirus, taking the overall tally to 1,03,74,932. With 264 new deaths, the overall fatality toll has reached 1,50,114, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Wednesday. it if for the fifth consecutive day that the country has reported below 20,000 cases.
The number of casualties as well the daily cases have been steadily falling over the last few months in India. The country recorded 16,375 new cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday which is its lowest total in six months. The Covid-19 active caseload remained below 3 lakh for the 16th consecutive day.
The number of people who have recovered from the disease have surged to 99,97,272 pushing the national recovery rate to 96.36 per cent, while the Covid-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.45 per cent.
Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state till date. Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan account for over 84 per cent cases in the country. Maharashtra accounts for 33% of total deaths in India while Tamil Nadu has contributed to 8.11 per cent.
According to the ICMR, 17,74,63,405 samples have been tested up to January 5 with9,31,408 samples being tested on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 86 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.86 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
