New Delhi: Google Doodle is paying tribute to the Indian physicist and mathematician Satyendra Nath Bose for his immense contribution to quantum mechanics. The creative doodle by Google shows Bose experimenting as it remembers his work when on this day in 1924 he sent his quantum formulations to the German scientist Albert Einstein who recognised it as a remarkable discovery in quantum mechanics.
It is said that Bose considered Albert Einstein as his mentor. He is best known for his collaboration with the latter in developing a theory regarding the gaslike qualities of electromagnetic radiation (Bose-Einstein statistics).
Bose was born on January 1, 1894, and had a wide range of interests in various fields including physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, mineralogy, philosophy, arts, literature, and music.
Bose was a student of Hindu School in Calcutta and later attended Presidency College securing the highest marks at each institution.
Bose was inspired by the physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose and historian Prafulla Chandra Ray and worked as a lecturer in the physics department of the University of Calcutta from 1916 to 1921.
Bose wrote a paper in 1924 deriving Planck’s quantum radiation law without any reference to classical physics. He was awarded India’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan in 1954.
Any particle that lays under Bose’s statistics today is known as a boson. Many scientific inventions have arisen from his work which includes the discovery of the particle accelerator and the God particle.
