Vienna: The police in Vienna is carrying out a massive crackdown following the multiple shooting incidents which claimed several lives in the capital of Austria .

The police have arrested at least 14 people following multiple raids to nab the suspects involved in the Vienna shootings.

Austria’s Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said in a statement that the 14 people who have been arrested all have links to  Islamist gunman Kujtim Fejzulai. The raids and subsequent arrests took place in Vienna, St Polten town and Linz city.

Kujtim Fejzulai had been arrested in April last year while attempting to travel to Syria in order to join the Islamic State (IS). The Austria-born terrorist was released from jail in December last year.

The 20-year-old was shot and killed dead by the police while firing on innocent people near the Seitenstettengasse synagogue in Vienna.

The authorities in Austria have not ruled out the possibility that a second gunman may have been involved although there has been no indication as yet.

The Islamic State had claimed responsibility for the attack by posting a video on its online propaganda channel.
