Mumbai: The Mumbai Police on Wednesday arrested Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami for alleged involvement in the suicide of a 53-year-old interior designer in 2018.

The police said that Arnab Goswami was arrested from his house on Wednesday morning by a team of Alibag police. The police claimed that in 2018, the architect and his mother had committed suicide as they were upset over the non-payment of dues by Republic TV.

In May this year, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had announced that he had ordered a fresh inquiry into the case following a complaint by Adanya Naik, the daughter of architect Anvay Naik.

Deshmukh said that Adanya alleged that the Alibaug police did not investigate Arnab Goswami’s channel for not paying dues, which she claimed caused her father and grandmother to commit suicide in May 2018.

Reacting to the claim of non-payment of dues, Republic TV said in a statement that the full amount had been paid.

Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar called it an “attack on freedom of the press” in Maharashtra and said it reminded him of the Emergency.
