New Delhi: The corovirus pandemic continues to grow at an alarming rate in India and has now registered a new record spike with 6,654 fresh COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours.
This is the second day in a row that a daily increase in excess of 6,000 coronavirus cases has been registered.
India had registered the previous record COVID-19 growth on Friday with 6,088 new coronavirus cases in single day.
India has now recorded a daily growth of over 5,000 COVID-19 cases for four consecutive days.
May has thus turned out to be a record breaking month for the coronavirus pandemic in India as the month has now seen 14 days with daily increase of over 3,500 COVID-19 cases.
The global coronavirus pandemic, which started in Wuhan, China has wreaked havoc all over the world.
In spite of all precautions and a nationwide lockdown, cases of coronavirus infection continues to increase in India as well.
As Lockdown-4 brought in easing of restrictions across the country, India crossed the 1.25 lakh mark coronavirus cases with the total number rising to 1,25,101, the Union Health Ministry data revealed on Saturday.
Of the total coronavirus cases, 69,597 are active, 51,783 have recovered while 3,720 people have lost their lives due to the deadly COVID-19 virus.
The worst hit state continued to be Maharashtra with 44,582 cases, 1,517 people deaths while 12,583 people have recovered. Next is Tamil Nadu with 14,753 cases and 98 deaths while Gujarat is at the third spot with 13,268 cases and 802 deaths.
Delhi has so far reported 12,319 cases with 208 fatalities and 5,897 people recovering from the disease. States with more than 5,000 cases are Rajasthan (6,494), Madhya Pradesh (6,170) and Uttar Pradesh (5,735).
Other major states and Union Territories that have reported more than 1,000 cases are West Bengal (3,332), Andhra Pradesh (2,709), Punjab (2,029), Telangana (1,761), Bihar (2,177), Jammu and Kashmir (1,489), Karnataka (1,743), Odisha (1,189) and Haryana (1,067).
States and UTs that have reported a significant number of corona cases are Kerala (732), Jharkhand (308), Chandigarh (218), Assam (259), Tripura (175), Chhattisgarh (172) and Uttarakhand (153).
The first pahase of nationwide coronavirus lockdown began in the country on March 25, when the number of coronavirus infected people was 606. When the second lockdown started in the country on April 15, the total number of coronavirus cases in the country was 11,439.
The third phase of the lockdown began on May 4 when there were 42,533 coronavirus infected patients in the country. There were 96,169 COVID-19 patients in the country when the fourth phase of the lockdown started on May 18.
It took 86 days for the number of coronavirus cases to reach 25 thousand in India. Cases doubled to 50 thousand within the next 11 days. Then in a week the number of cases exceeded 75 thousand.
It took India just 5 days to go from 75 thousand to one lakh. It took 62 days to reach 100 to one lakh cases. The growth rate of coronavirus cases in India is the fourth slowest country in the world. Turkey, France and Iran have slower growth rate than India.
