New Delhi: After the unprecedented victory of NDA nominee in Presidential elections, the clamour for its Vice-Presidential candidate is building up. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati today declared her party’s support for Jagdeep Dhankhar, the former West Bengal governor running for Vice-President’s office.

Taking to Twitter, the BSP chief announced her party’s support for the NDA’s V-P candidate.

“In view of the larger public interest, BSP has decided to extend its support to Jagdeep Dhankhar in the election for the post of Vice President.” Mayawati tweeted in Hindi.

The election for the Vice-President post will take place on August 6 and the Opposition has fielded former Union Minister Margaret Alva as its candidate for the post.

With NDA holding sway and enjoying clear majority in both the houses, Jagdeep Dhankhar leads the race with comfortable margin and the support by Mayawati’s BSP comes as further boost in his candidature for the post.

The tenure of incumbent Vice President Venkaiah Naidu comes to an end on August 10.
BJD to support, TMC to abstain

Like Droupadi Murmu, the V-P candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar is also getting acceptance from Opposition parties as BSP is the third Opposition party to support his candidature.

Earlier, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) had announced support for NDA’s V-P candidate Jagdeep Dhankhar in the upcoming elections, slated for August 6.

TMC which shared acerbic ties with then Bengal governor, recently announced to abstain from voting in the upcoming Vice Presidential poll.

The Vice-President of the country, the 2nd highest constitutional post in the country, is elected through electoral college, consisting of members of both the houses – Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, a lawyer by profession, had entered politics in 1989. He was made West Bengal Governor in July 2019 and since then kept the headlines buzzing with his tumultuous relations with Mamata government.
