New Delhi: Riding high on success of 2022 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swept the UP MLC elections while Samajwadi Party (SP) is staring at complete rout.

Out of the 27 seats for which elections were held, the BJP is understood to have clinched victory in most of the seats and is now staring at majority in the Upper House. Counting for biennial elections is underway for 27 seats while 9 BJP candidates were elected unopposed.

Following resounding victory in the UP Assembly elections, the BJP has now set its eyes on becoming single largest party in the Legislative Council also. Going by numbers, the saffron party already got its 9 candidates elected unopposed and is likely to record decisive win in 24 seats. Samajwadi Party has suffered a big jolt as it is unable to stake claim over even 1 seat. The setback for BJP is that its candidate from Varanasi lost the MLC elections.

In the 100-member Assembly, the BJP currently has 24 MLCs, SP has 17 and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has 4 while Congress, Apna Dal (Sonelal) & Nishad Party have 1 member each in the Upper House.

Adding up the existing members with newly elected ones, the BJP tally will cross 55 mark, a clear majority. After record victory in Assembly polls, this will be yet another record for saffron party as no party had clear majority in the Upper House in past 35 years.

In 2022 Assembly elections, Yogi-led BJP scripted history by returning to power for second consecutive term, a feat not repeated since 1985.

In the recently concluded MLC elections, the constituencies which recorded highest voting included Raebareli, Pratapgarh & Sitapur, all recording more than 99% voting.
