Lucknow: As part of its zero tolerance policy against crime and the mission to rid the state of Uttar Pradesh of crime, the state government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has awarded legal punishment to around 3,000 criminals in the last three years, setting a record of its own kind.
According to the latest statistics of the Directorate of Prosecution, the highest number of 10520 criminals was given punishment by the court under the Arms Act from the year 2020 to 2022. Besides, 4078 criminals were given punishment under the Pocso act, 1218 for involvement in rape cases, 8646 in crime against women and children, 2387 in murders, 1152 in dowry deaths, 1141 in robberies and 279 in cow slaughter cases. The Directorate of Prosecution has also bagged several honours for awarding record number of punishments to criminals.
It is noteworthy that on the one hand the UP Police have killed 184 miscreants in encounters so far, on the other criminals and gangsters are being punished also through effective lobbying by the police in the court.
332% increase in punishment given under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act
Prosecution Directorate’s ADG Ashutosh Pandey said that in the last three years, effective lobbying in the court and 100% testimony of witnesses has ensured punishment of the criminals. Against punishments given to 535 criminals in the year 2020, 2313 criminals were penalized in 2022, registering an increase of 332 percent. Similarly, in the cases of rape, 671 criminals were punished in 2022 against 177 in 2020, registering an increase of 280 percent.
Similarly, in the year 2020, in the cases of crime against women and children, 1048 criminals were punished while in the year 2022, 5351 criminals were punished, recording an increase of 411 percent. In murder cases, 420 criminals were awarded punishment in the year 2020 while 1180 criminals were punished in 2022, registering an increase of 181 percent.
The Directorate of Prosecution awarded punishment to 182 criminals in 2020 and 572 in 2022 in dowry death cases. Similarly, in the year 2022, 745 criminals were penalized in 2022 against 177 in 2020 in the robbery cases, registering an increase of 321 percent. In cow slaughter cases, 200 criminals were penalized in 2022 against 29 in 2020. However, in the last three years maximum number of punishment was given in Arms Act cases. A total of 6373 criminals were punished under Arms Act in 2022 against 1960 in 2020 the year 2022, 6373 criminals were punished under Arms Act registering an increase of 225 percent.
The Directorate of Prosecution has been honored with awards and certificates for punishing criminals in a short time across the country as well as for performing well in the country on e-office and e-prosecution portals. Ashutosh Pandey, ADG of the Directorate of Prosecution, said that in the year 2021, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, on behalf of the National Crime Report Bureau under the ICJS system, had awarded Uttar Pradesh for prosecution work in the country. This award was also given to the Prosecution Directorate of Uttar Pradesh in the year 2022. Similarly, in the year 2022, the SKOCH Award was awarded for e-Prosecution.
