The Kashmir Files, Kantara, 3 other Indian films shortlisted in first list for Oscars 2023

New Delhi: Indian film ‘The Kashmir Files’ is among the 301 films shortlisted for consideration for the ‘Best Picture’ award at the 95th Academy Awards. It is among the likes of ‘Aftersun’, the highest grosser of 2022 ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ and others. Along with The Kashmir Files, there are four other Indian films on this list.

Director Vivek Agnihotri shared the news on his Twitter handle writing that his film has been shortlisted in the first list for the Oscars. He added that it is great news for Indian cinema. He also mentioned that Pallavi Joshi, Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty and Darshan Kumaar have been shortlisted for the ‘Best Actor’ awards.

‘Kantara’, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, ‘RRR’, and ‘Chhello Show’ are other Indian films on this list. Though the Oscar nomination is not close enough yet, these Indian films are still in the race for one of the most prestigious awards.

On the other hand, ‘Chhello Show’ (The Last Film Show), directed by Pan Nalin, was India’s official entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category and has been shortlisted to be considered in that category as well. Also, ‘Naatu Naatu’, a song for ‘RRR’ is in contention in the music category.

While these films are yet to receive a nomination, multiple films getting shortlisted for the Oscars is surely good news for Indian cinema.

RRR, Gangubai Kathiawadi and Kantara had moving stories, they also did well at the box office, on the other hand, The Kashmir Files and Chhello Show narrated the stories of the marginalised.
