Washington [US]: US President Joe Biden on Monday (local time) said that India, an exception among US major allies, \u201chas been somewhat shaky\u201d on the Western sanctions punishing Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the Business Roundtable\u2019s CEO Quarterly Meeting on Monday, referring to how unified Washington Allies have been in isolating President Putin, Biden stated, \u201c\u2026The Quad is, with the possible exception of India being somewhat shaky on some of this, but Japan has been extremely strong \u2014 so has Australia \u2014 in terms of dealing with Putin\u2019s aggression.\u201d<\/p>\n
Biden in his remarks asserted that Putin didn\u2019t anticipate how unified NATO and western allies would be in a global response to his invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
At a virtual Quad conference earlier this month, leaders of Australia, Japan and U.S. denounced Russia\u2019s invasion. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated \u201cthe need to return to a path of dialogue and diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n
India is the only member of the QUAD that has not condemned Russia\u2019s invasion. All member countries of the QUAD barring India have also slapped significant sanctions on Russia.<\/p>\n
ndia has abstained from key United Nations votes on the crisis, calling instead for an \u201cimmediate cessation of violence\u201d and a return to dialogue.<\/p>\n
Russian forces launched military operations in Ukraine on February 24, three days after Moscow recognized Ukraine\u2019s breakaway regions, Donetsk and Luhansk as independent republics followed by the announcement of a \u201cspecial military operation\u201d to \u201cdemilitarize\u201d and \u201cdenazify\u201d Ukraine.<\/p>\n
