Tel Aviv [Israel]: Israeli Parliament on Sunday voted in favour of a precarious coalition government, ending Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s 12-year historic run as prime minister.<\/p>\n
Israeli Parliament, commonly known as Knesset, approved the new government by just a single vote \u2014 60 to 59, with one abstention, New York Times reported.<\/p>\n
Naftali Bennett, a right-wing Jewish nationalist and former tech millionaire, became the new prime minister of the country. It will be the first time in 12 years the country will be led by someone other than Netanyahu.<\/p>\n
Yair Lapid, a centrist leader, is set to take Bennett\u2019s place after two years if their government can hold together that long. They lead an eight-party alliance ranging from left to right, from secular to religious, that agrees on little but a desire to oust Netanyahu.<\/p>\n
In a speech made before the confidence vote, Bennett hailed his unlikely coalition as an essential antidote to an intractable stalemate.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe stopped the train before the abyss,\u201d Bennett said. \u201cThe time has come for different leaders, from all parts of the people, to stop, to stop this madness.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bennett vowed to \u201cmaintain allegiance to the State of Israel and its laws, to faithfully fulfill my role as prime minister\/a member of the government and to uphold Knesset resolutions.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thousands of people gathered in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, celebrating the new government.<\/p>\n
The municipality building lights up in the colours of Israel\u2019s flag for the occasion.<\/p>\n
US President Joe Biden congratulated Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and said he is looking forward to working with him.<\/p>\n
