The death was confirmed by Chowdhry\u2019s half-sister Raell Padamsee on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Offering condolences on his demise, filmmaker Deepa Mehta tweeted: \u201cMiss him \u2014 a real loss.\u201d As actor, Chowdhry had worked in Mehta\u2019s films \u201cBollywood\/Hollywood\u201d (2002), \u201cFire\u201d (1998), and \u201cCamilla\u201d (1994). He had also collaborated with Mehta as a screenplay writer for \u201cSam &amp; Me\u201d, besides co-starring in the 1991 film with Om Puri, Peter Boretski and Jaaved Jaafery.<\/p>\n<p>Among colleagues who mourned Chowdhry\u2019s demise was actor Rahul Khanna, who worked with him in \u201cBollywood\/Hollywood\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite his diminutive frame, he was a towering icon of Indian diaspora cinema and a master of his craft. By far, one of the most endearingly quirky and acerbically witty people I\u2019ve had the pleasure of knowing. A true original!\u201d tweeted Khanna.<\/p>\n<p>Bollywood fans would best remember Chowdhry for his endearing comic. He made his Hindi film debut in Basu Chatterjee\u2019s 1978 comedy, \u201cKhatta Meetha\u201d, and went on to make his mark with roles in Chatterjee\u2019s \u201cBaton Baton Mein\u201d (1979), Hrishikesh Mukherjee\u2019s \u201cKhubsoorat\u201d (1980) and Shekhar Kapur\u2019s \u201cBandit Queen\u201d (1994), besides Sanjay Gupta\u2019s \u201cKaante\u201d (2002).<\/p>\n<p>Gupta took to social media and wrote: \u201cRIP my friend Ranjit Chaudhury.\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from Deepa Mehta\u2019s films, He also made his mark in the Indian diaspora circuit with Mira Nair\u2019s 1991 release \u201cMississippi Masala\u201d, and the filmmaker\u2019s 1996 release, \u201cKama Sutra: A Tale Of Love\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chowdhry was also seen on the Hollywood screen in comedies such as \u201cThe Night We Never Met\u201d (1993), which starred Matthew Broderick and Annabella Sciorra, and the Nicolas Cage-Bridget Fonda rom-com \u201cIt Could Happen To You\u201d (1994). In Hollywood, one of his last notable films was \u201cLast Holiday\u201d (2006), starring Queen Latifah.<\/p>\n<p>He was last seen in the Akshay Kumar co-produced 2011 sports comedy \u201cSpeedy Singhs\u201d, which released in the international market as \u201cBreakaway\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The late actor also featured in the popular American television show \u201cPrison Break\u201d, in the role of Dr Marvin Gudat.
