Washington DC: A senior United States Department of State official has raised concerns over \u201celectoral abuse and violence\u201d in the lead-up to Pakistan\u2019s general election last month.<\/p>\n
A subcommittee of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the US House of Representatives held a hearing on the \u201cfuture of democracy in Pakistan and the US-Pakistan relationship\u201d on Wednesday, where, Donald Lu, the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian affairs, said President Joe Biden\u2019s administration identified a series of \u201cirregularities\u201d in the conduct of the February 8 elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were particularly concerned about electoral abuses and violence that happened in the weeks leading up to the polls,\u201d Lu said, pointing to the attacks on police, politicians, and political gatherings by terrorist groups; harassment and abuse of journalists, particularly female journalists, by political party supporters; and lastly, \u201cseveral political leaders were disadvantaged by the inability to register specific candidates and political parties.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lu said that election monitors said on polling day that they were barred from observing vote tabulation in \u201cmore than half of the constituencies across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The US lawmaker also informed the members of Congress that authorities shut down mobile data services despite a high court order not to interrupt internet services on election day.<\/p>\n
Earlier, 30 US Congressmen wrote to President Biden and Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, asking them not to recognise Pakistan\u2019s new government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a US lawmaker questioned Lu on whether the US State Department had conducted its own investigation of the general elections, to which the latter responded in the affirmative and said certain actions were also being taken, such as monitoring of the process to address poll irregularities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis country needs to start using its economic might to correct some of these wrongs. These people are being mistreated,\u201d the US lawmaker said.<\/p>\n
Lu was questioned about the allegations of delivering a warning to the then-Pakistani ambassador in Washington, suggesting that the removal of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from office would help improve ties between Washington and Islamabad. At the time, Khan was strengthening ties with Russia despite its war on Ukraine.<\/p>\n
In response, Lu said: \u201cI want to be very clear on this point. These allegations \u2014 this conspiracy theory \u2014 is a lie. It is a complete falsehood. I have reviewed the press reporting related to this, what is called the cipher in Pakistan, the alleged leaked diplomatic cable from the embassy here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Audience members at the House hearing interrupted the testimony of the US State Department official, who termed the allegation of the US hand behind Khan\u2019s ouster a \u201cconspiracy theory.\u201d<\/p>\n
The cipher controversy first emerged on March 27, 2022, when Khan, while addressing a public rally, waved a letter before the crowd, claiming that it was a cipher from a foreign nation that had conspired with his political rivals to have the PTI government overthrown, according to Geo News.<\/p>\n
He did not reveal the contents of the letter, nor did he mention the name of the nation it came from. But a few days later, he accused the United States of \u2018conspiring\u2019 against him and alleged that US lawmaker Donald Lu had sought his removal.<\/p>\n
Khan and his PTI government were removed from power in April 2022 through a parliamentary vote of no confidence, a first in Pakistan\u2019s history.
