New Delhi: Surat Court today rejected the application filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seeking stay on his conviction in the 2019 defamation case on \u2018Modi surname\u2019 remark.<\/p>\n
Now, Rahul Gandhi will approach the Gujarat High Court or Supreme Court to file his appeal against the Surat court\u2019s order.<\/p>\n
The Surat Sessions Court had granted bail to Former Wayanad MP, who had filed an appeal following his conviction in the case on April 3.<\/p>\n
Rahul Gandhi, who was a Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad was disqualified after a lower court in Surat sentenced him to two years in jail on March 23 under sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A case against Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case was filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Purnesh Modi.<\/p>\n
The case was filed against Rahul Gandhi for his remarks against \u201cModi\u201d surname while addressing a campaign event ahead of the Karnataka Lok Sabha Elections in 2019.<\/p>\n
